The 1996 Wildcats were the first championship football team for Gouverneur since 1982. Also, the first squad to play in the quarter-finals of the NYS High School Championship Tournament. The team featured five 1st Team All-Northerns, Luke Weldon, Greg Besaw, Cory Denesha, Mike Petrie & Jason Sheen. The team also have five 2nd Team All-Northerns: Kenny Nivar, Nate Leonard, Matt Conklin, Lucas Simmons & Jason Storie. Opening with a loss to Ogdensburg, the Wildcats won nine straight games as they rolled to a Section X Regular Season and Class B Playoff Championships. The team had a thrilling 30-29 victory over previously undefeated Beekmantown in the Section VII/X North Country Super Bowl, before losing to Revena of Section II in the NYS High School Quarter-Finals.

The 1997 Wildcats were the first team in Boys Track & Field since 1926 to win both the Section X Championship and the Van Dusen Invitational. The team featured NYS Track & Field qualifiers Taurus Jones in the 100 meters, Greg Besaw in the 200 meters and Kenny Nivar and Nate Leonard joining Jones & Besaw in the 4x100 meter relay. The Wildcats finished undefeated in the regular season and finished first among Class B schools in the South Jeff Invitational, while 3rd overall behind two Class A schools.

Curtis Serviss
Class of 1947
Inducted: October 4, 2014

In the late 1940's, Curt was a rare four-sport athlete, participating in football, basketball, baseball and track & field. He would earn six letters while playing in the four sports. He also earned All-League status in football, baseball and basketball as a senior. Upon his graduation, Curt would sign to play minor league baseball for the Boston Red Sox organization. He played one year of Class A for the Auburn Doubledays and one year for Class AAA Pawtucket Red Sox.

Dave Centofanti

Dave was a star in both varsity football and track & field at Gouverneur from 1977 through 1980. His senior year he rushed for 1,024 yards, scored 17 touchdowns and led the football team in tackles while earning 1st Team All Northern. Dave would place a stamp on his high school athletic career in track & field. He went undefeated in the Triple Jump in both his junior and senior seasons and undefeated in the Long Jump during his senior year. He qualified for the NYS Track & Field Championship both years. In his senior season, he garnered the Section X and Van Dusen Invitational Most Outstanding Field Event Performer awards. Again being selected to All-Northern in his junior and senior years.

Dave White
Class of 1958
Inducted: October 4, 2014

As a three-sport athlete at Gouverneur in the 1950's, Dave was a 10 time varsity letter winner and an integral part of championship teams in football, basketball and baseball. As a quarterback in football, Dave led the Northern League in touchdown passes in both his junior and senior campaigns. As a senior, he was nominated by the Northern New York Sportswriters to play in the All-American High School Classic in Memphis, Tennessee after helping the Wildcats to their first Northern League Championship since 1916. He was also selected to the All-Northern First Team in basketball as a senior. The teams Dave played on were credited with winning four championships and placing second five times. Upon graduation from Gouverneur, Dave was offered a full Division I football scholarship to the University of Buffalo and a partial scholarship to the University to Rhode Island, as well as a full scholarship to St. Lawrence University.

Doris Monaco
1961 – 1995 Teacher and Coach

Until the 1970's there were no girls' interscholastic athletics in Section X schools. Doris was instrumental in developing girls' athletics through the intramural sports program at Gouverneur. She also coached the after school bowling intramurals at the local bowling alley every year until girls interscholastic athletics were established. She coached Cheerleading from 1965-1969, Girls Track in 1975 and Softball in 1976. She also gave swimming lessons and supervised the water walking and water aerobics program through the Continuing Education program from 1990 until her retirement from teaching in 1995. In her 33 years of service to the school as a coach and physical education teacher, Doris developed a reputation as an excellent teacher, colleague and friend to the Gouverneur Central School family.

Joel Baer
Class of 1994

A tremendous all-around athlete in the early 1990's, Joel was a ten-time Section X All-Northern selection and a two-time team MVP at Gouverneur High School. As a football player, Joel was a Section X 1st Team All-Northern selection at running back in 1992 & 1993 and would also garner a 2nd Team All-Northern selection in baseball in 1992 before being selected to Section X 1st Team All-Northern status in baseball in 1993 & 1994. He was named to the Watertown Times All-North teams in football and baseball in his senior year. However, it was in wrestling that Joel's star would truly shine, as he posted a career record of 122-27-1 while winning five Section X Championships and qualifying for state competition in 1990 through 1994. In addition, he was named Most Outstanding Wrestler in 1991, was honored with the Tim Woodard Award in 1992 and the Adrian Bigelow Award in 1993.

John Mossing
1965-2002 / Teacher and Coach

A three-year letter winner in track & field at Ohio Northern University, where he also played basketball. John graduated in 1964 and moved to Gouverneur, where he taught health and physical education from 1965 until retirement in 2002. John's interscholastic coaching career began in 1965 as an assistant coach in JV Football and JV Boys Basketball. He later moved to the position of Head Varsity Boys Basketball Coach. He would lead the 1979 Gouverneur varsity squad to the best season in school history. They compiled an impressive 22-4 record, Section X League Championship, Section X Class "A" Championship and a trip to the New York State Final Four in Rochester.

Melanie Johnson
Class of 1977
Inducted: October 4, 2014

Melanie was arguably the premier runner in Section X Girls Cross Country & Track and Field from 1973 to 1977. During those four years, she was unbeaten in Section X Cross Country meetings during the regular season and won three straight Sectional Championships before finishing 4th with a sprained ankle in her senior year. As a Track and Field athlete, she ran the second fastest mile in NYS High School Track & Field in 1974 with a time of 5:49. From 1975 through 1977, she went undefeated in the Mile and Two Mile during the regular season. She won the Two Mile in Sectional Championships three times, the Mile in 1976 and placed 2nd in the Mile in 1975 & 1977.

Nate Leonard
Class of 1999
Inducted: October 4, 2014

One of the best all-around athletes in school and Section X history, Nate was a star in football, basketball and track & field in the late 1990's. A six time Section X First Team All-Northern selection in football and basketball, Nate was also a four time Watertown Times All-North selection, being selected as a sophomore and junior in each sport. Nate would set the Section X single game rushing record of 352 yards versus Canton and was the Central Division MVP in his junior year. He was the starting point guard on the Empire State Games Silver Medalist Adirondack squad in his junior year and the 1997 Section X Overall Championship basketball team and also the runner-up for the Joe Jukoski Award. Nate was an integral piece of the 1996 Section X Championship football team and the 1997 Section X and Van Dusen Championship track & field team. As a member of the Top 50 NYS High School football team as a senior, Nate was also selected to play the NY/NJ Governor's Bowl. Nate received a basketball scholarship offer from LeMoyne College, but he chose to accept a full Division I football scholarship to the University of Rutgers.

Rick Mace
1972-1985 / Coach and Teacher
Inducted: October 4, 2014

As a basketball, football and baseball coach for 13 seasons, Coach Mace led teams to an impressive record of 181-37, a winning percentage of .830. His coaching career at GHS began in 1975. As an Assistant Coach, he helped guide the 1975 JV Football team to an undefeated season of 8-0 and a JV Championship. In 1977-1978 he would coach the JV Baseball team to a record of 21-4 and a 1977 JV Championship. It was in basketball that he would really make his mark on GHS athletics. The JV Boys Basketball coach from 1976-1978, he would put together a record of 46-8 and lead the Wildcats to a JV Championship in 1978. He led Varsity Girls teams to a record of 94-21 from 1979-1984, while winning both Section Class B and Section X Overall Championship in 1980, 1982, 1983, and 1984. Coach Mace would coach one more season in 1985. He led the JV Girl Basketball team to a record of 12-4.

Teresa Bush
Class of 1994

A three-sport star at Gouverneur in the early 1990's, Teresa was an eleven-time Section X All Northern selection and an eight-time Gouverneur MVP in soccer, basketball, and volleyball. In soccer, Teresa was selected to the Section X All-Northern 2nd Team while helping Gouverneur win the Class B Championship in 1990, before garnering 1st Team honors in 1991, 1992, and 1993. As a volleyball player, Teresa would post 2nd Team All-Northern honors as a sophomore in 1992 and 1st Team selections in 1993 & 1994. It was in basketball that Teresa would put her stamp on Gouverneur athletics, becoming the fourth athlete in school history to score 1,000 points in a career. She finished with 1,064 at Gouverneur, which places her 2nd among girl hoopsters all-time. In addition, Teresa was selected to the Section X All-Northern 2nd Team in 1991 and the 1st team in 1992, 1993, and 1994. She was a Watertown Times All-North Honorable Mention selection in both her junior and senior seasons.
