TREEhouse Gang

Terrific Readers Enjoy Excellence

FOWLER TREEHOUSE 2005 - 2006

Terrific Readers Enjoy Excellence

The TREEhouse Gang is a program based on the Accelerated Reader (AR®) program. The program’s philosophy is based on focused attention on careful reading of books, which improves students’ critical-thinking skills and builds an intrinsic love of reading.  How does it work?  Students choose their own books from the TREEhouse and read them at their own pace.  Students then log on to the computer and take a Reading Practice Quiz.  Teachers can monitor students’ comprehension and recall of the text.  Both the student and teacher get immediate, individualized constructive feedback to direct ongoing reading practice.

This year, Fowler has made some minor changes to our TREEhouse program.  Due to supervision and state mandates, the TREEhouse program will be available only during the regular school day.  This year we will be looking for volunteers to open the TREEhouse during the children’s lunch time to allow for test taking.  Instead of recognizing the top three individuals at the end of the year, we will be taking a community approach and emphasizing classroom goals.  Medals will still be awarded at the end of the year for high point achieving readers.  The main purpose for this program is to instill a passion for life-long reading.  Below are a few rules for students as members of the TREEhouse:

Ø     TREEhouse is open to Grades K through 5.

Ø     Students need to acquire 5 points to become a member in grades 1 - 5.

Ø     Students will only be allowed to take 2 books out at a time.

Ø     There will be a 2 week limit to return books.  Students may renew these books.

Ø     It is important that students care for the TREEhouse books.

Ø     Students are to read or listen to books before taking a test.

Ø     Books will not be used during the test.  The goal is for students to be able to comprehend and recall parts of the book.

If you have any questions about the TREEhouse, please ask your child’s teacher.
