  • Big Ears--If you need to train some ears to pitches, this is the place. Big Ears plays an interval and then the user guesses which interval was played. This site uses a java applet that, once loaded, requires nothing more from you than speakers..
  • Energy in the Air: Sounds form the orchestra--Excellent resource on the symphony orchestra. This history of each type of instrument. as well as how sound becomes music, is explained.
  • Essentials of Music--From Sony and the W.W. Norton Company, the essentials of Music is a series designed around the "best classical music" from the middle ages to the present. There are almost 70 composers biographies, overviews of each era, a glossary and more than 200 audio excerpts of many pieces of music. (Real Audio required)
  • Instrument Encyclopedia--a searchable database of more than 140 different musical instruments. This University of Michigan site also offers a glossary, information on other museum collections, and links to related sites
  • Music Notes--Billing itself as an "interactive online musical experience," Music notes is one of the more useful music sites. It features information on the theory, history, and styles of music, as well as a list of links, nice glossary and much more.
  • Piano Nanny--The Piano Nanny features fully interactive online piano lessons. The 34 lessons take about a half hour each and serve as a good introduction to piano playing. For some lessons, you will need the Flash and QuickTime players.
